#68 - Universal Human Themes - Death
Hello Readers!
This week I want to continue my creative writing series and talk about the what the next temple in The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time represents. This time we are talking about a very grim topic that all humans face which is: Death.
Again just to recap here are the temples and what they correspond to:
The Forest Temple represents = Change
The Fire Temple represents = Friendship
The Water Temple represents = Love
The Shadow Temple represent = Death
The Spirit Temple Represents = Struggle
The Light Temple represents = Celebration
Death represents not just physical Death, but also a beginning of something new. A transition to a new stage of life. The ending of one phase and the start of another. Of course whenever people hear the term, the physical aspect is something that we all think about. But why talk about death, especially today? Well because IT IS in the game of Ocarina of Time. And I think as a father, eventually children need to learn about and finally discover that life does come to a end for humans. It does not continue forever and ever. This realization and understanding (plus maybe experience of others dying), is a part of growing up.
Growing up, as I have thought about it, is the central theme in Ocarina. Since you start as a child and continually grow throughout the game. Us too, as kids in the 90’s were growing and experiencing life at the same time. It was a very interesting and unforgettable experience. I will never forget just how cool and awesome Ocarina of Time was and going to my friend’s house to experience the game on their home console. And also being so into the game and how to play it. The 90’s were a treat indeed.
Well I’m not sure what else there is to say? I think as wonderful and adventurous life can be, there are some aspects of life that we need to acknowledge and accept. Death being one of them. And since the Shadow Temple was an exploration into the depths of Hyrule’s Royal Family and their dark past. It was very interesting going into the well as Young Link and then going forward into time to visit the Shadow Temple which resided in the graveyard. Writing about this I can already visualize this, which goes back to why Ocarina was so brilliant. It was the perfect sized game and it was so small that you remember everything just about.
Well that’s all I wanted to say! Hope you enjoyed my little article and I oh just want to update you all that I am starting on a new High Valued Course that I am sure that you all will love! I’m going to be working on this slowly but surely during my evening hours. And If I’m on breaks and/or alone I will try to study this topic to craft something of high value.
Have a great week! -Calvin
